Georgia is a second year student, studying BA Hons Music at the University of Leeds. After leaving school in Durham, she studied classical violin at Leeds College of Music, then transferred to Leeds University, where she is now focusing on conducting under Eduardo Portaal. She proudly holds the position as first violin with Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra, Leeds University School of Music Orchestra and Leeds Baroque. Georgia's versatility leads her to work in many different areas of music. One aspect includes contemporary music, when she was Musical Director for Leeds University Pantomime in 2017. As well as playing violin and conducting, Georgia is a mezzo soprano in Leeds College of Music Student Chorus, where she has recently participated in the Ustek Festival in Prague, and has sung Howell's Hymnus Paradisi and Elgar's The Music Makers in Leeds Town Hall. previous tours have included Paris, Cologne, London and Prague. The future has a lot more projects in store, including conducting the University's Opera, Orpheus in the Underworld in May 2018. Georgia is very much looking forward to working with Grassington Singers for their upcoming concert in April. Outside of music, Georgia enjoys travelling, recently visiting South East Asia and Europe. She hopes to travel more in the future.
Previous musical directors for Grassington Singers have included Alan Clark, Nicholas Hewlett, Graham Coatman and Tim Knight. Nicholas introduced us to a number of different types of music, among them sprituals, contemporary pieces, and Bob Chilcott's Little Jazz Mass. In September 2016 we performed under Nicholas John Rutter's Feel the Spirit, which was tremendously successful and enjoyable for choir and audience alike.
Prior to Nicholas, we were very lucky to secure the services of Tim Knight.
Tim is an enthusiastic and dynamic conductor, as sure as eggs are eggs - current members will understand what is meant by this! We have said goodbye to Tim, but we think we may not have seen the last of him............
